Janet is the Legislative Expert for GPG’s Malawi project. Before joining GPG, Janet worked as a parliamentary Legal Counsel and Legislative Drafter at the Parliament of Malawi. In this role, she supported the Parliamentary Service Commission and the National Assembly in all legal matters. She supported the National Assembly in its legislative process, which included drafting legislation and vetting all bills, and in drafting Speaker rulings. She provided advice in all legal matters and in representing Parliamentary Committee and the National Assembly in Court. Janet has further experience working with Parliament and Members of Parliament, including on parliamentary legislative process and oversight functions.. Prior to joining the public service, she worked in civil and criminal litigation in two law firms in Malawi and in Cape Town, South Africa.
Janet holds a LLM in Public Law, and a LLB (Hons) from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting from the International Legal Institute, African Centre for Legal Excellence, Uganda, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from University of Cape town-LSSA.
