Lord Kirkwood is a long-standing GPG Associate.
Trained as a Solicitor before he was elected to the House of Commons in 1983, he received a Knighthood in 2003 for services to Parliament. He was elevated to the House of Lords in 2005.
As a member of the Commons, he was appointed Chief Whip of the Liberal Democrat parliamentary party for the period 1992-1997, held the post of Chair of the Select Committee on Social security from 1997-2005, and served as a members of the House of Commons Commission from 1997-2005.
In the House of Lords he was Chair of the Committee on Information and a long standing member of the Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee.
During his time in Parliament Archy also served as a trustee/Director of several organisations in the UK including the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the Wise Group, and GovNet Communications.
Archy formally retired from active membership of the House of Lords in September 2020 and now serves on the Board of the Global Partners Governance Foundation
