GPG endorses IPU’s Common Principles for Support to Parliaments

This first insight from GPG was written by CEO & Founder Greg Power and expresses our Associate RH Alistair Burt’s endorsement of IPU’s Common Principles.

On behalf of GPG, Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP endorses the Common Principles for Support to Parliaments formally adopted by IPU’s governing bodies on 16 October 2014 during the IPU’s 131st Assembly. The Common Principles pull together the experience of more than forty years of external support to parliaments. They underline, among other points, the central role of parliament in defining its strategic objectives, and the role that external assistance can play in supporting the development of democratic parliaments. The Common Principles provide a strong framework for more effective cooperation between parliaments and their partners. Democracy Reporting International has published its Global Mapping and Analysis of Parliamentary Strengthening report sponsored by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. It includes lessons learned from GPG’s extensive work on parliamentary strengthening as well as a case study of GPG’s work in Iraq (see Annex 6). To view the report click here.
