Amal is a Senior Programme Manager at GPG who joined GPG in February 2023 to deliver projects focusing on Sudan’s transition to democracy. She is an electoral systems, legal frameworks and governance expert with extensive experience in political and parliamentary outreach. Previously, she worked as a senior electoral systems and legal framework expert with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, IFES, where she regularly contributed to ongoing projects in the MENA region. Within this capacity, she wrote monthly analysis on Sudan’s political environment. She has also designed and delivered training workshops on types of election systems and election management bodies to stakeholders in Sudan.
Her PhD research, conducted at the Political Economy Department of King’s College London, focused on the process of electoral system reforms within institutional contexts where the constitution assigns extensive powers favouring the executive branch at the expense of the legislative. Before electoral systems and their potential for inclusive and democratic governance captivated her, Amal was a Middle East-based senior news and program producer with Aljazeera Television where she spent 12 years covering political developments and active conflicts in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, before embarking on a PhD to change careers.
